Nimby

Nimby 邻避

“Nimby” is an acronym for the phrase “not in my backyard,” which is often used to describe the opposition to a proposed project, say, for a nuclear power plant or a prison. The phenomenon is known as nimbyism and the opposing residents are sometimes called nimbies. Most often a community opposes a proposal because they were not properly represented in the decision-making process, but it can also be a result of nimbyism, in which case the protesters are not opposed to the development per se, but to the idea that it will be close to them. Installing solar panels on roofs, for example, is generally considered good for the environment, but many do not want their neighbors to do so out of fear they might look unsightly.
