Wearable technology refers to electronic and computing devices that can be incorporated into clothing or accessories to improve the convenience and portability of technologies, such as smartphones and computers, and thus the productivity of the wearer. Though wearable electronic products have been around since the 1980s, with devices such as digital watches and hands-free sets for cellphones, it is only recently that they have seen major developments in the consumer market. The introduction of Google Glass, Samsung Gear and the announcement of an Apple iWatch has put wearable technology at the forefront of the consumer electronics industry. Before these products, the areas that saw the most development were the health care and military sectors. In these non-consumer markets, militaries have developed devices for communications and optics while bio-medical companies have produced various technologies such as wireless biodata-tracking pills and fitness monitors. The implications of wearable technology are considerable for other fields such as gaming, music, education, transportation and finance.
