Gutter oil 地沟油
Gutter oil is oil with an extra something, but nothing you would appreciate having in your food. It is often pumped from sewers outside of restaurants or pressed from trash. Nasty, but pervasive. For every 10 meals that you eat outside, chances are that one of them is cooked with gutter oil. Though it can taste like edible oil, gutter oil is harmful because it may contain hazardous chemicals that can lead to cancer. Hole-in-the-wall restaurants and canteens are more likely to use gutter oil because it is cheap. But expensive restaurants are no guarantee of safe cooking oil either. There is a thriving industry on recycling and selling oil that should be disposed of for good. Though the police have busted several factories running this illegal business, gutter oil is still finding its way to people’s tabletops.
