Sangmazi a term for a gambling intermediary in Macau who recruits clients to casinos and encourages them to gamble, earning commissions from casinos and tips from gamblers. They often serve government officials or wealthy businessmen. VIP clients from mainland can gamble on money they borrow from sangmazi, then repay them when they return home. This is a way around government controls on how much money can be taken across the border. The credit sangmazi extend to a single VIP can be as high as 50 million yuan, and some of these intermediaries have opened their own casinos serving the clientele they have built up.
